5 Steps to Keeping Your Account Safe on Facebook

Post updated on September 29, 2014 to ensure it remains current.

facebook business page hackedAfter assisting in recovering a few hacked accounts recently, I feel it time to share some tips on how to keep your account safe on Facebook. Not only it’s important to you, but also by keeping your account safe you are keeping your friends and your business pages safe on Facebook.

Here are my 5 steps to keeping your account safe on Facebook:

1. Choose a unique password

If your Facebook password is the same as your email password or you haven’t changed it for a while, it’s time to change it now! Go to your Account setting and change your password on the ‘General Settings’ tab.

2. Beware of scams

Think twice before you click on a link in your news feed that promises something that is supposed to be ‘shocking’ or too good to be true or a link on an email that seems to be from Facebook but doesn’t relate to any action you have taken recently. Some of the most common scams are listed on  the Facebook help page: http://www.facebook.com/help/scams

3. Confirm your mobile number

If you forget your password, Facebook can send you a new one to your mobile phone.

4. Turn on login notifications

Login notifications will notify you whenever your account is accessed using an unrecognised computer/device. You can turn these notifications on in your Security Settings.

5. Turn on login approvals

Login approvals prevent any logins from unrecognised devices without a unique code that is sent to your mobile each time someone tries to login to your account on a new computer or mobile device. You can turn login approvals on in your Security Settings.

Bonus 1. Select trusted contacts

Trusted contacts are friends that can securely help you if you ever have trouble accessing your account. You can set these in your Security Settings.

Bonus 2. Review trusted browsers

Review the list of trusted browsers in your Security Settings.

Lastly….

If your account or someone else’s account is hacked, go to this page to report it and recover the account:
