How to avoid getting your Facebook Business Page hacked?

social_media_not_workingWhat would it mean to your business if one day a hacker took over your Facebook business page and you no longer had access to it? And what if Facebook tells you that there is nothing they can do to help you out either?

Let me tell you a true story about “Tim” …

“Tim” is a computer savvy small business owner. He has set up a Facebook page for his business, had a graphic designer to design some nice graphics for his page, took Facebook training courses and invested money in running promotions and Facebook ads to build this Facebook tribe. He worked hard to grow his tribe and managed to build a  nicely growing community of followers on his Facebook page.

All was looking great… until one day….

“Tim” logs into his personal Facebook account one morning and realises that he no longer has admin access his Facebook business page… “Tim” can see that his page is still up. It’s just that HE CAN’T ACCESS IT…!? What is going on…?

….

What happened to “Tim” is a heart-breaking story of another hard-working small business owner, who has put a lot of his time, effort, money and heart into Facebook marketing, only to have a hacker hack into his personal Facebook account one day and remove his Admin access to his own page.

What happened next is that the hacker asked “Tim” to pay money to have his access to his Facebook business page restored. But can you trust a hacker…?

And if you were thinking that “Surely you can just report this with Facebook and have your admin access restored…”, this is not the case! It is somewhat easy to restore access to a hacked personal Facebook account, but much more difficult, if not impossible, to get your stolen Facebook business page back.

facebook business page hackedFacebook currently has not process in place to return admin access to the rightful owners of the page. The way Facebook sees it is: Once you lose your admin access, you no longer have any rights what-so-ever to the page. End of story.

Some businesses have been successful in getting their business pages back after an online publicity campaign, but this approach is not guaranteed to bring any results.

Currently the only option for the real owners of the hacked page, is to report their page with Facebook, so that it gets deleted…. and then simply start over.

Since it’s very difficult to get a hacked business page back, a much better option is to prevent your Facebook business page being hacked in the first place.

Follow these steps to protect your Facebook business page:

1. Remove any Admin users who no longer require access to your business page. Especially if they don’t use their personal Facebook accounts often.

2. Don’t grant ‘Manager’ admin role to anyone you don’t know and trust, because they can add and remove admins, including yourself.

3. Protect your personal Facebook account by following these five steps I have outlined in another blog post. Click to read it here >> 5 Steps to Keeping your account safe on Facebook
