Social Media Marketing for Professional Services: It All Comes Down to Trust
September 16, 2026
For many law firms, new business has traditionally arrived through reputation, professional networks and referrals.
That hasn’t disappeared. But what happens after someone recommends your firm has changed considerably.
A prospective client rarely receives a name and immediately picks up the phone. They Google the firm, they look at the website, they find the lawyers on LinkedIn or Instagram, and they scroll through recent content.
And if they’ve been given the names of two or three firms, they’re comparing them.
The referral gets you onto the shortlist. Your digital presence helps you get you chosen.
Legal services require an extraordinary level of trust
Choosing a lawyer isn’t like choosing where to have lunch.
Whether someone is navigating a divorce, dealing with a workplace dispute or making a significant commercial decision, there may be a great deal at stake.
Before contacting a firm, they want evidence that the people behind it understand the problem, have the expertise to help and, importantly, are people they would feel comfortable speaking to.
This is where social media shines.
Good legal content allows prospective clients to experience some of your expertise before they ever sit across the table from you.
Stop measuring success by likes
One of the traps law firms fall into is judging social media primarily by social media metrics.
Followers and engagement have their place, but 50 likes from people who will never engage your firm aren’t necessarily more valuable than one post seen by the prospective client you actually want to reach.
The better question is: What does the right prospective client need to see to feel confident contacting us?
Suddenly, your content calendar looks rather different.
Show people what it’s like to work with you
For a family law practice, that might mean explaining complex legal issues in accessible language while also showing the empathy and judgement clients can expect when they walk through the door.
For a commercial firm, it might mean demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of the challenges its clients face, rather than publishing generic explanations of the law they could find in a hundred other places.
In both cases, the content is doing more than dispensing information. It is showing potential clients how you think.
That difference is important.
If everything you publish is educational, you risk becoming a free legal information service. If every post ends with an enthusiastic demand to BOOK A CONSULTATION NOW, you’re essentially a billboard with a law degree.
Give people somewhere to go next
Great content can attract attention and build trust, but it still needs to lead somewhere.
And we shouldn’t expect someone to watch a 45-second video about a legal issue and immediately think, Excellent. I’ll engage this law firm.
The next step may be smaller: reading a useful guide, visiting a relevant service page or making an initial enquiry. The aim is to create a clear path that allows someone to move from interested observer to prospective client while continuing to build confidence in your firm.
And then there’s AI…
AI can make producing legal content faster. It can help with research, planning, editing and repurposing.
It can also produce 800 words on “Five Things to Know About Commercial Contracts” before you’ve finished making your coffee.
The problem is that anyone else can produce exactly the same article.
What sets your law firm apart is the expertise and experience of your people. AI has a valuable role behind the scenes, helping with organisation and efficiency, but the ideas, insights and personality your clients see should remain distinctly human.
The goal of social media for law firms isn’t to post more.
It’s to make sure that when the right person investigates your firm, they find enough expertise, evidence and humanity to think: These are the people I want to call.
If your brand or business is lacking in social media strategy or direction it might be time to book a 15-minute strategy session to find out how we can support your business growth.
