It’s Not Me, It’s You: Why You Should Love Your Social Media Agency (and What to Do If You Don’t)

The Work Behind the Recognition
April 15, 2026
One of the most interesting things we see when working with clients is that the biggest shift is rarely technical.
Yes, we help businesses with strategy, content, video and social media visibility. But often the real transformation happens internally, in how a business owner begins to see their own expertise.
Many of our clients come to us with decades of experience. They are respected in their industry. Their clients value their insight. Yet when it comes to speaking about their work publicly, especially on video, there is often hesitation.
“Who wants to hear from me?”
“Everyone in my industry already knows this.”
“I’m not comfortable putting myself out there.”
Sound familiar?
This is where a blind spot often exists. What feels obvious to you is not obvious to everyone else. Years of experience can become so embedded in how you think that you forget how valuable your perspective actually is.
One of our recent clients experienced this shift firsthand.
After deciding to focus on developing a new service offering, they began working with the Social Media Tribe team to create a series of short videos explaining their views, their approach and the problems they help clients solve.
At first, stepping in front of the camera felt uncomfortable. Video does that. It pushes you outside your comfort zone.
But something interesting happened along the way.
The process of articulating their ideas on video did not just create content for social media. It reinforced their own clarity and confidence around the service they were offering.
By speaking their thoughts out loud and sharing them publicly, their intention became stronger. Their messaging became clearer. And that clarity began to show up in their business development conversations.
In a two-week period, they put forward six proposals to prospective clients. Three have already converted into new business, with another likely to follow.
Was that purely because of the videos? Not entirely.
But the videos played an important role.
When speaking with prospective clients, our client now had something tangible to point to. Instead of trying to explain everything in a single conversation, they could say, “I’ve recorded a short video that explains how I approach this.”
Sometimes prospects watched the videos. Sometimes they did not. But the presence of that content created something powerful: confidence and authority.
Video gave them a platform to state their thinking clearly and consistently. It helped position them as an expert in the space they were moving into.
There is another factor at play here too, particularly in Australia. Many professionals are cautious about appearing to “talk themselves up”. Tall poppy syndrome runs deep in our culture. We are often far more comfortable talking about the work than talking about ourselves.
But positioning yourself as an expert is not about ego. It is about clarity.
When people understand how you think, what you believe and how you solve problems, it becomes much easier for them to choose to work with you.
And sometimes, having the right team beside you makes all the difference. Because the things that are hardest to see about ourselves are often the things that others recognise immediately.
That is one of the most valuable roles we play for our clients. We help them bring their expertise into the light, often in ways they would not have done on their own.
And once that happens, the results can follow surprisingly quickly.
